Rebecca Anne Banks: The Grif and Other Conversations
I will read from my new EBooks of poetry, particularly The Grif and Other Conversations: even more poetry from the street and Confessions of a Soldier: when love is war and other insouciancies.
Peter B. Bailey, The New Life Poet, AKA Peter Spirit Walker, was born in Halifax in 1953, arrived in Montreal in 1963. Peter, was the first black Canadian ever to write a book of poetry in English in Quebec. His first book was titled "This Is My Song" and was published in 1975. He published his second book entitled "Going Black Home" in 1978. In 1987 he won a literary award sponsored by the Black Community Council of Quebec. In 1993 Peter published his third book of poetry, entitled "To The Sky This Time." During the 1980's he formed a group of NDG writers known as the "New Life Poets," who perform all over Montreal. In 1992, Peter was published by Prof. George Elliott Clark, in his anthology of black Nova Scotian writers. He became the vice-president of the Black Canadian League of Artists, in 1994.
Sadly, the visionary organization no longer exists. Presently, Peter is completing his fourth book of poetry, which will be out in October of 2013. The most remarkable accomplishment about the poetry is that he continues with the same passion now for his craft, as he did in the beginning, some 30 years ago.
